Migraitan is used to treat migraine. These tablets contain the ingredient Sumatriptan which belongs to a group of medicines called Triptans. Migraine symptoms may be caused by the temporary swelling of blood vessels in the head due to temporary imbalance in the bodys chemicals.

Migraitan is used to treat migraine. These tablets contain the ingredient Sumatriptan which belongs to a group of medicines called Triptans. Migraine symptoms may be caused by the temporary swelling of blood vessels in the head due to temporary imbalance in the bodys chemicals. 

Why do I need this medicine?

Sumatriptan is used to treat migraine headaches. It helps to reduce pain and other symptoms associated with a migraine headache.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Sumatriptan only when you have a migraine attack. Do not take Sumatriptan if you do not have a migraine attack.

Take Sumatriptan exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.

Sumatriptan should be taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. If your migraine headache does not go away after taking the first dose, do not take a second dose without first asking your doctor. If your doctor says that you can take a second dose, wait for at least 2 hours after the first dose before taking the second dose.

Do not take more than 2 doses of Sumatriptan in a 24-hour period.

Do not take more than 300 mg of Sumatriptan in a 24-hour period.

Sumatriptan may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, break or chew the tablet.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Sumatriptan should not be taken to prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks.

Your doctor may need to do a medical examination and various tests before starting you on Sumatriptan.

If you have an increased risk of heart disease, your doctor may advise you to take your first dose of Sumatriptan in the clinic so that he can monitor your response. You will also be required to have regular heart check-ups while being treated with Sumatriptan.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience tightness, pain, pressure or heaviness in the chest area, throat or jaw after taking Sumatriptan.

Alert your doctor if you frequently have migraine attacks which require you to take Sumatriptan, especially if you have more than 4 migraine headaches in a 30-day period.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Sumatriptan is not a painkiller. Do not use Sumatriptan for any other purpose other than to relieve a migraine headache.

What side effects could I experience?

Sumatriptan may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other common side effects of Sumatriptan include nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, flushing, throat tightness, dry mouth and a tingling or burning sensation.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Sumatriptan if you have already taken similar migraine medicine such as eletriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan or zolmitriptan in the last 24 hours.

Do not take Sumatriptan if you have taken any migraine medicine which contains ergotamine or methysergide in the last 24 hours.

Alert your doctor immediately if you or your family have a history of heart disease, or if you have any of these medical conditions:

- high blood pressure
- stroke
- chest pain
- high cholesterol
- diabetes
- certain types of headaches known as basilar or hemiplegic migraine
- blood circulation problems
- liver or kidney disease
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)

If you smoke, let your doctor know.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Do not take Sumatriptan if you have already taken similar migraine medicine such as eletriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan or zolmitriptan in the last 24 hours. 

Do not take Sumatriptan if you have taken any migraine medicine which contains ergotamine or methysergide in the last 24 hours.

Alert your doctor if you are taking or have previously taken any of these medicines:

- selegiline
- antidepressants such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram, venlafaxine
- sibutramine (a weight control pill)
- a herbal supplement called St John's wort 

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Certain types of food and food additives such as chocolate, cheese, coffee and monosodium glutamate (MSG) may trigger a migraine attack. You may want to keep a food diary to help you identify possible foods that trigger off your migraine attacks.

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
